Mage tips

The Sorcerer in Brief

The Sorcerer, has always been surrounded by mystery and intrigue. From Jesus, through to Merlin and David Copperfield, we all admire the users of magic.

In Diablo, the Sorcerer is the weakest class at beginning level. He has no decent attack, and his defence is underpowered too. But as he progresses and reads those books, he somehow polymorphs into something truly spectacular.

Equipping your Sorcerer

Most of your money is going to be spent on books and Mana, but when you can spare some, try to buy items only for their magical attributes. You are not going to actually use a weapon for it's intended purpose, so it's damage is irrelevant. The same is also true of armour, Your aim is to take out the baddies before they get a chance to hit you. The only defence for a Mage is a good offence, so the primary consideration when selecting armour, is will it make you more powerful in attack mode.

The Witch

The Witch is going to be your friend, you will pay her a visit whenever you are in town. She will sell you many of the books you need, Mana, which is your magical energy, and she will buy from you all the scrolls that you don't need.

Healing

Once you get "Mana Shield", healing is going to be a thing of the past. Be sure to carry plenty on Mana at all times. If you need to heal, use the spell, when you don't have potions or scrolls.

Elixirs

After you reach level 20 and are allowed onto "Nightmare", the Witch will start to stock the Elixirs. You should check to see if she has any everytime you are in town (And at least once per Dungeon Level), until you are "Maxed". You will find that the Elixir of Vitality is much rarer than the others. So at this point it usually best to start putting more of your 'Level up' points onto this attribute.

The Mage and Staves

It is generally more efficient to cast real spells than to use staves, try to see that using a staff as a weapon is of little importance to you. Look only at the magical benefits of items. A staff takes two hands which means only two magical benefits. Look for a single handed weapon to carry, and a shield. This will allow you to gain up to four magic benefits, as well as the AC improvement offered by the shield.

The Spells

As you learn a new spell, use it a few times where it's quiet until you know how to work it best.

The main Offensive spells are, 'Chain Lightning', 'Fireball', and 'Stone Curse'. The first two I just mentioned can be considered to be everyday spells. 'Stone Curse' is great to use on Unique, and when the going gets tough.

Golem is well worth using whenever you can afford the Mana. Cast one, then follow, picking up the gold as you go.

Town Portal should be used often, I always adventure with one in use at all times. It gives you a means of escape if things get too hot.

Teleport is handy for quickly moving across levels when used repeatedly, and also for jumping walls. One of the ways I like to do the final quadrant on level 16, is to teleport in, cast a few 'FireWalls' or 'Guardians', and a Golem then 'Port' out again. Doing this a few times takes care of the Knights that lurk in Diablo's lair.

'Mana Shield' is a defensive spell, a good Mage always has one in use.

The Butcher

There are two method I like for disposing of this ugly brute. First the trickier one... Open the door...Cast 'FireWall' across the doorway.... Close the door. The Butcher will stand in the fire by the door until he drops. It takes a bit of practise to get the timing right, but it's quick and painless.

This method is much easier, but takes longer... First clear the whole level, then locate a room that has grating on one wall (And an unblocked door)... Cast a town portal in that room then leave, closing the door.... Now go to the Butcher, open his door and let him follow you.... Lead him to just outside the room with the town portal in... stand right by the railings, then let him kill you.... now select "Restart in town"... come through the portal....you can now cast all your favourite spells at him and he can't get you.....EASY...!! (This method only works for games in Multiplayer mode).

King Leorick

He is a tall Skeleton wearing a crown and carrying a long sword, He has a strong shining aura that you can see on the ground around him. You should watch out for this aura, it will be visible through walls.

He is not  a problem to the mage really, just be sure to have "Holy Bolt" hotkeyed, Mana shield on, and a supply of "Full Mana". His crown will be useful to Mages.

The Red Bat

On level 5, you may bump into a bright red Bat. He is bad news until you are level 13-14. He moves faster than you and has very fast attack. If you aren't ready to face him yet, then bypass the level, and return for him later.

Diablo

The Mighty evil one is immune to all forms of fire, and highly resistant to other magic. If you can get him on his own, just keep pumping out "Chain Lightning", and he'll eventually fall.
